An introductory class on Chinese brush painting. You will learn the basics of Chinese brush painting, including basic brushstrokes, how to hold the brush and other aspects covering the Gongbi style and Xieyi style.
The two styles of Gongbi and Xieyi are integral to Chinese brush painting. We will be learning about and painting in both. Gongbi style is the drawing-like outline and detailed outlines. On the other hand, the Xieyi style is the freehand expressive brushstroke. Gongbi style is careful and realistic, and Xieyi style is abstract and sometimes stylized.
For the subject that we will be painting we will begin with the goldfish (Koi) and the Heron (bird).
Expect explanation on the history, background, and cultural significance of this art form. We will look at some examples of classics in the style as we work on creating our own.
