“Even Muddy Rivers Flow”

Here on canvases, both scavenged and unfinished, referenced by “revision,” painting acts as a way to connect the past, present, and future. As a metaphor, rivers have a similar effect as they are in constant motion. For me, the profundity of art is in the process. I don’t think a work of art is ever finished, but rather chosen to be “realized.” It is similar to looking at an old yearbook picture, where you are the work of art.

About the artist:

Michael Rider (they/them) is a singer-songwriter and artist from New York City. Predominantly known as a musician, having released four studio albums, most recently 2022’s “Cycle” being nominated for Wavy’s album of the year and signed under Grimalkin Records, Michael is also an accomplished visual artist. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Michael broke their teeth as a student of Henrico High School’s Center for the Arts (CFA) where they were taught by Richmond’s own Mary Scurlock. Michael migrated to NYC in 2013 as a Silas Rhodes scholarship recipient to the School of Visual Arts. Inspired by a lineage of abstract painters like Cecily Brown, Susan Rothenberg, Cy Twombly, and Richard Diebenkorn, Michael’s visual art is a mix of styles that nevertheless carry a timeless quality. Rider has exhibited in NYC’s Flomenhaft Gallery, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Miami Art Museum as a YoungArts finalist in 2012.
