Public Reception Date: May 17th - 7pm to 9pm
Like Andy Warhol before her, Pop Art devotee and contemporary painter Bree Chapin explores the power of repetition in her latest series: Some of Those That Work Forces. This show of multiple 18x24 canvases, painted in her signature neon pink palette, features a repetitive depiction of the same cartoonish police officer. Each piece is alike, but not identical. The subject is not meant to capture an individual, nor is he meant to represent every member of the force. He is a caricature of cruelty itself. Bree's work in this series focuses on the issues of police brutality and inequality of enforcement across socio-political demographics.
From the artist:
"I am attempting to create an intentionally uncomfortable space. The audience must confront an atmosphere that asks what relationship we have to our institutions. What are the checks and balances on a “force” ostensibly meant to protect us, yet represents an unaccountable threat to so many?" - Bree Chapin
